Governors Hang on for Week One Win over Aberdeen Central

The Pierre Governor football team would get a week one win, hanging on to a 20-14 score over the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles on Saturday on the road.

Aberdeen Central would get on the board first with a 15 yard touchdown throw from Brenner Waldrop to Colby Dauwen late in the first quarter. But after two empty possessions for the Governors offensively, Pierre would score three straight touchdowns starting with a one yard touchdown run by Trevor Rounds, a 17 yard touchdown catch from Cooper Terwilliger from Kaleb Lounsbury and a two yard touchdown run from George Stalley on the final play of the first half to lead 20-7. Pierre was held off the scoreboard in the second half and a late touchdown from Dauwen of eight yards out to pull within six, but the Governors recovered the onside kick and had to kneel downs to run out the clock.

Colter Babcock had two interceptions for the Governors while offensively Lounsbury would go 23-37 for 200 yards and a touchdown. Terwilliger would get 10 grabs for 122 yards.

Pierre will face Huron, who lost 60-0 to Yankton on Friday night in the first home game of the season. Coverage will begin at 6:30 with kickoff at 7:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
