Homecoming night went the Sully Buttes Chargers way, as they ran and passed their way through the Burke Cougars to a 56-6 victory Friday in Onida.
Sully Buttes finished with 262 yards rushing, and 239 yards passing to amass 501 yards total offense to earn their second victory of the season. Last weeks’ rushing champ Gavin Barber only had four rushes for 28 yards before he left in the second quarter with an injury, while junior Kadyn Westergren picked up the slack, rushing for 159 yards on 15 carries. Junior quarterback Wesley Wittler found his rhythm through the air, going 12 of 18 for 237 yards. Wittler opened the game with a 30 yard TD run, and scoring passes to four different receivers. Wittler also scored on a 20 yard run, that covered approximately 80 scrambling yards for his second rushing TD of the night. The junior also had two interceptions to help the cause.
The Cougars had trouble sustaining any consistency of offense, and scored their lone touchdown after a Charger fumble at the Sully Buttes 20 yard line.
The Cougars also suffered injuries to two starters who never returned to the game. There was no update as to the severity of both players.
2-0 Sully Buttes now goes into their bye week, and will play next at home against Hitchcock Tulare on September 13th. The 1-1 Cougars go from the frying pan to the fire, as they travel to top ranked Avon to face the Pirates next Friday night.
