Pierre to Host Aberdeen Central, Brookings in Busy Opening Weekend

The Pierre Governor soccer teams will be at home this weekend as the regular season begins as the Govs host Aberdeen Central on Friday and Brookings on Saturday.

The Governor girls made the quarterfinals of the 2023 state tournament last season, just one win shy of 10 total victories on the season at 9-5-1. The Govs split its games with the Golden Eagles and Brookings last year, falling to Aberdeen Central, but the Golden Eagles graduated 42 of the 46 goals scored from last year with Deshani Peters scoring 19 goals. Aberdeen Central also graduated its goalkeeper as well as they look to rebuild and reload into the 2024 season. The Govs do lose a lot of scoring from seniors Ryann Barry and Brianna Sargent, but bring back goalkeeper Emlyn Swanson. Brookings finished just 2-11 last season. Kira Swenson, head coach of the Pierre Governors says though, the focus is on what the Governors can do…

To be at home, Swenson says it’s nice to play on the grass fields of Pierre…

The Governor boys finished the 2023 season at 3-8-3 tying Brookings, but falling to Aberdeen Central. Pierre brings back plenty of experience along with having a goalkeeper step into the role full time and still does have experience. Jacob Leiferman played in a couple of games and filled in last year, but as Haley Fabel has graduated, will be the full time goalie for the Govs. As Pierre is ready for the two matches, Sean Blanchette, head coach of the Governors says it’s about what the Pierre Governors can do this weekend more so than what the other teams have…

Blanchette says outside of the results, they need to make sure they’re in a good spot moving forward coming out of the weekend…

The Governors will face Aberdeen Central on Friday with the girls playing first at 4:00 and the boys to follow at 6:00. Then on Saturday, the girls will play first against Brookings at 11:00 AM with the boys to follow at 1:00 at the PILC Fields in Pierre.
