Governors Begin Downstream Practice with Sights Set on Eight

Monday starts the process all over again. The Pierre Governor football team is on the quest for the next state title, this year would be number eight. Practice began Monday at Oahe downstream.

It’s a tradition every year to signify the beginning of practice. The team gets on the practice field in the morning on Monday, then head out for Oahe downstream and spend three days together as a team. Steve Steele, head coach of the Governors says day one of football is always a good time…

The Governors won a record breaking seventh straight state championship last season beating Yankton soundly, breaking through West Central’s six straight state championships in the early 2000s. Now the Governors are setting the sights on number eight. Turnover of rosters is not unfamiliar to this team having guys who have already graduated college on several of the state championship teams. This year, the Governors will return two defensive starters and five offensive starters. Those two defenders are Carson Stoeser and Elijah Boutchee. Boutchee finished with 27 total tackles including four and half sacks and eight tackles for loss as part of the defensive line. He says he’s excited for this new look defense…

The offensive line returns three starters from last year’s team, Ty Mikel, Zayden Rounds and Jacob Mikkonen who helped the Governors average 39.8 points per game. Mikkonen says Oahe downstream is a lot of fun to get the season rolling…

The Governors will open the season on the road on Saturday, August 31 in Aberdeen against the Central Golden Eagles. Kickoff is at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
