PIERRE, (KCCR) — The South Dakota Department of Transportation is starting a paving project on South Dakota Highway 34 on the east side of Pierre Wednesday. The project will involve milling off the old asphalt surface and putting a new surface down. The project will go from the base of Garfield Avenue, east to the Farm Island Recreation Area turn-off. A cold milling of one-inch of asphalt will take place along with asphalt blade leveling and two inches of new asphalt concrete surface. The adjacent pedestrian trail will also see work with a one-and-a-half inch asphalt concrete surface. The entire project has a length of approximately two miles. During the work, traffic will be reduced to a single lane with flaggers and a pilot car to guide motorists through the work area. Short traffic delays can be expected during the work. The pedestrian trail will be closed to foot and bicycle traffic during the project. Completion is expected by August of this year. The project has an estimated cost of two-point-one million dollars.
