The Aberdeen Smittys would get a one hitter in game one and swing its way to a game two win beating Pierre Post 8 8-0 in game one and 7-2 in game two for a doubleheader sweep in Pierre on Wednesday.
The Eights had just two base runners in game one with Nolan Petersen doubling and George Stalley being hit by a pitch as Zane Backous would drive in the game’s first run, the winning run with a double in the top of the first. Jaxon Ladner would drive in two runs on a double and Lance Siefkan would also double for the Smittys. Grant Beyer would throw a one hitter allowing just two base runners in total with three strikeouts in just 59 pitches in seven innings. Miles Doyle would be tagged with the loss giving up four runs over five innings on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
In game two, Aberdeen would get an RBI single from Brendon Livermont to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before a two run single by Donnie Soderlund would make it 3-0 and eventually 4-0 with an RBI from Drew Salfrank. Pierre, though, would answer with two runs in the bottom of the second as JJ Bucholz would score on a wild pitch and Petersen would have an RBI groundout to make it 4-2. In the top of the sixth, and Aberdeen leading 5-2, the game entered a near 20 minute lightning delay which brought in Dawson Getz to the mound and get through the inning, but would give up two unearned runs in the seventh. Sutton Sonnenschein would double for Pierre and had two of the five hits in the loss.
Pierre will drop to 1-13 with the losses and now 1-8 in South Dakota games. The Eights travel to Minot for a weekend tournament starting on Friday with a pair of games to begin at 2:30. All games are on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
