The Casper Spuds, the leading team in the Independence League, would dominate the middle innings en route to a 12-4 opening series win on Wednesday.
Oahe would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Buck Snabes would ground into an RBI fielder’s choice and Cole Ottersburg would have an RBI ground out. But a four run fifth, three run sixth and four run seventh pushed the Casper deficit to a then 12-3 lead. Josh Phillips hit a three run homer in the fifth and finished with eight RBIs going 3-4, a triple away from the cycle. Leandro Guevara would have an RBI double in the fifth and Trey Martin a sacrifice fly RBI in the eighth for the four Zap runs. Ben Irsfeld picked up the loss going five innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Vince Pollizi went 3-4 with a double as Snabes and Mason Lang each had two hits for Oahe.
Oahe is now 3-14 on the season while Casper improves to 11-4. Game two of the series is tonight at Hyde Stadium with first pitch at 6:05. The series will move to Casper on Saturday and Sunday.
