The Pierre Governor baseball team had two big innings in an 11-1 win over the Sturgis Scoopers on Friday in the first win of the 2024 high school baseball season.
Pierre jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a Jett Zabel RBI triple and Ridge Leimbach driving in Zabel on an RBI groundout. Leimbach would deal through four shutout innings of work allowing just two hits, five walks and striking out eight. Pierre had its first big inning in the third scoring five behind RBIs from Zabel, Leimbach, and two from Grayson Hunsley. Pierre then scored another four more in the top of the seventh with Nolan Petersen driving in two and Spencer Easland driving in another two. Cooper Terwilliger would throw the final three innings in relief allowing one unearned run on a hit and three strikeouts. Dawson Getz, Zabel, Petersen and Hunsley each had two hits in the win.
Pierre will travel to Sioux Falls next weekend for a Friday doubleheader against Lincoln and a Saturday doubleheader against Washington. First pitch on Friday is at 5:00 and Saturday at noon. All four games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
