PIERRE, (KCCR) — An off-duty Hughes County Sheriff’s deputy is being credited with helping colleagues bring a fugitive to justice over the weekend. Sheriff Patrick Callahan says deputies had been watching for 39 year-old Terry Lee Schoenhut after gaining knowledge he may be in the Pierre area. Schoenhat was wanted on charges from a number of South Dakota counties in Tripp and Pennington and neighboring states like Nebraska and Iowa. Schoenhut, according a posting on the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page has a history of resisting law enforcement while having the potential to be armed and dangerous. Hughes County Sheriff’s deputy Gary Nickerson spotted Schoenhut at a local business and called into Central South Dakota Communications. The Sheriff’s Office, with help from the Pierre Police Department responded quickly to take Schoenhut into custody without incident. He’s currently being held at the Hughes County Jail.
