A lot of turnovers and tough shooting, but it was the Pierre Governors defeating the Rapid City Stevens Raiders in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday with a 42-34 win.
The Governors forced 26 turnovers on the night, but had 18 of their own in the win. Pierre shot just 28% from the field as Stevens hit on 32% but did not make a three in the game. Remi Price led the way for Pierre knocking in 15 points while Lennix DuPris had eight. Isabell Higgins had a double-double for the Raiders scoring 13 points and grabbing a game high 16 rebounds. The Govs went 8-8 from the free throw line in the second half to help secure its 19th win of the season. Pierre never gave up the lead and it was never tied once the Govs scored its first points of the night.
Pierre will face the sixth seed Harrisburg at 7:45 Friday night after its win over O’Gorman. Washington and Jefferson will meet in the 1-4 matchup at 6:00 in the other semifinal game. Pierre’s contest will be on KCCR and online at kccrradio.com with Jon Winkler on the call on Friday.
