Pierre Girls Wrestling Recognized as Prep Team of Year

The Pierre girls wrestling has been dominant in its first two years of existence and has added hardware with multiple state champions and a team state championship. This year, they were recognized as the South Dakota girls prep team of the year but the South Dakota sportswriters Association.

The girls team won the first ever team state championship while having seven of the 10 wrestlers reach the state semifinals. In its first year, there was not an official team score, but the Govs would have rolled its way in that team score as well. Matt Thorson, head coach of the Governors says it’s good for Pierre and for the sport of wrestling…

Over the last couple of weeks, Thorson says it’s been difficult with all the practice having been canceled…

But the Governors are the team of the year for a reason and Thorson says he was never worried about the girls putting the work in on their own…

The Governor girls will have its next competition on Friday, Jan. 6 hosting Harrisburg.
