The Pierre offense struggled to find the end zone, but the defense kept the Sturgis Scoopers to six points as the Govs beat Sturgis 21-6, Saturday night in Pierre.
Dre Berndt had a 28 yard interception return for a touchdown as the only score in the first half as Pierre barely tallied 100 yards of offense punting on all four offensive drives. Sturgis would score on its first drive of the second half on a 34 yard run by Konner Berndt but the extra point was blocked. The two teams would be in a stalemate for the remainder of the quarter. Lincoln Kienholz would punch in two touchdown runs, the first rushing TDs of the season for the Govs to close out the win.
The Governors would outgain the Scoopers 206-183 as Kienholz was 10-26 for 171 yards through the air. Pierre’s rushing attack only accumulated 45 yards with Brock Moser rushing for 21. Owen Cass would be 17-35 for 116 yards and two interceptions for Sturgis. Berndt finished with 83 yards on the ground on 21 carries.
The Governors will play in Box Elder next Friday against the winless Douglas Patriots. Kickoff is at 7:00 Central time with pregame at 6:30 on KCCR, kccrradio.com and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Greg Dean on the call.
