The first day of the state wrestling tournament has finished as the Pierre Governors, Stanley County Buffaloes and Sully Buttes Chargers continue into a busy Friday looking to find a place match on Saturday.
For the Sully Buttes Chargers, Chase Yellowhawk lost his match by fall to the top ranked wrestler in the 138 as Braden Sehr from Canton advanced to the quarterfinal.
The Stanley County Buffaloes saw Chase Hanson pick up a win 6-2 over his first round opponent in the 113 while both Levi Stover and Dylan Endres will work from the consolation side of the bracket after falling in their respective first round matchups in the 160 and 285.
The Governors picked up nine wins in the first round including four pins as Blake Judson, Kahlor Hindman, Regan Bollweg and Preston Taylor all secured a pin for the Govs in the first round. Hayden Shaffer, Tyson Johnson, Deegan Houska, Gavin Stotts and Jacob Larson all picked up first round wins as the Govs finished day one in fourth place as a team.
The state dual tournament ended with a wild finish. The Governors are into the state championship on Friday night as they face Rapid City Stevens but not before avenging two losses on the way to the title match. The Govs took down Mitchell 38-19 before tying Brandon Valley 34-34 but winning on tiebreaker due to an unsportsmanlike penalty, and Shawn Lewis says it was a huge difference…
Lewis was speechless after the win…
But Lewis says the focus moves to Friday and he’s especially excited for the girls to wrestle…
